Dancing in the Heart of the Dragon A Memoir of China eBook Ramona McKean Reviews
As Ramona shared her experience from China and walked me through all the emotions of the events, I wondered how anyone could ever still have a love for China. Ramona shares an amazing story of how she successfully survived her ordeal with the help of some very special people from China. She would never have survived without their unselfish kindness and devotion to help her. Dancing in the Heart of the Dragon is an amazing story and a "MUST READ".
This book offers a true glimpse into China - especially its rural parts.Much of it will surprise you if you have not yet read up on China. For me, the value of the book was not only into the insights it gives into China, but into the Ramone McKean's heart. You are a good person Ramona, and I very much enjoyed your dramatic story of injury and recovery. And example to us all. Thank you
China is a place that I have always wanted to visit myself; the mystery of the Orient as I had heard in the past, was a wondrous and engaging place.Upon reading Ramona's book, some of the mystery was resolved and left me asking for more. Ramona has written from her heart about a place in time that was at once engaging and showed us a personal and upfront view of a country that has captured the world's attention for centuries. It has both the beauty of the past and the challenges of the present; a country that struggles to catch up, and keep up with the modern world and find its place on today's world stage. It was well worth the read and I look forward to hearing more in the future from Ramona's writings.
This book takes the reader into the heart of China- its culture, daily life, spirituality and best of all, its young people. Through the eyes of the author, a non-judgemental Canadian English teacher and traveller, an amazing true story is told, of healing friendships and a devastating accident which forces her to leave a country she has begun to love. Using the love and spiritual truths gained from her experiences in China, the author shares her arduous time of physical healing through memories, dreams and journal exerpts. It is an honest, deep and tremendously interesting read.
I have had the pleasure of hearing many of Ramona McKean's stories about her adventures in China so I was filled with excitement when I was given the opportunity to read an advanced copy of Dancing in the Heart of the Dragon A memoir of China. The book lives up to my expectations. Ramona paints a vivid picture of life in different parts of China, describing the land and the people from her perspective as a westerner, doing her best to be accepting of another culture. In addition, Ramona tells the heart-wrenching story of her near-fatal accident, the assistance she received and the miracle of her survival.
I couldn't put this book down. I was amazed at the honesty and vulnerability expressed on every page. The author takes us through her personal experience of her developing love for China and her people. She recounts her excitement and intrigue at being there and the disastrous and premature ending to her dream of experiencing the country and the culture through the eyes of a resident.
She brings us along on the healing journey of both her body and her Spirit in a way that really made me evaluate myself and my own resilience and leaving me wondrous at the incredible strength of the human Spirit.
I highly recommend Dancing in the Heart of the Dragon A Memoir of China to anyone who wants to share Ms. McKean's experience and gather courage for their own.
Ramona McKean's writing is gripping. Every line caught my eyes with vivid scenes and deep meaning. There is not one pale expression in her memoir. Her experience takes place in a far and strange land, in a space between life and death.
Ramona was in Harbin, China in 2005 teaching English. During the winter break, she traveled with some students to the south of China. Dreamlike, the long trip brought her into a sweet-and-dangerous world. She met many kinds of Chinese people and saw various local scenes. She traveled far through the land geographically and also culturally, into Chinese traditions and mindset. Just as her trip was becoming even more interesting, a car accident on a local bus on a country road suddenly brought her to a new world. She did not have a seat belt and lived, but she was seriously injured. It was as if an invisible hand threw her into a dark muddy river. She could not speak the language and had no choice except to trust that an invisible force and Chinese strangers would rescue and take care of her. Her life was immersed with theirs in zero distance.
That stark experience gave Ramona a special chance to know China and Chinese people from a very different vantage point China through the eyes and heart of a Westerner who went through extreme pain and near death. Her survival is like a Chinese saying The phoenix was burned to nothing and then rose again to the high.
I bought and read this book because I teach Chinese in America, and the author taught English in China. We do similar jobs. Ramona had a very wide mind-opening experience to another part of the world - China. Her heart was opened wide too. In her book she shows a bird's eye view of her life as a magnificent picture drawn with vivid detail. If you are going to China or you are just interested in China generally, this book is a good choice to read. You will learn lots and be touched too.
This book really looks into the heart of the writer and into the heart of Chinese culture. As she learns about China, she learns about herself and the life transforming accident she has shows the heights of human compassion and how bridges can be made across cultures. Definitely a worthwhile book to read.
